Frequently Asked Questions
Gameplay
What's the minimum word length?
Words must be at least three letters long. Two-letter words are not accepted, even if they appear in the dictionary.
Can I reuse a tile within the same word?
No. Each tile can only be selected once per word. However, if the board contains duplicate letters (for example, two E tiles), you can use both of them in the same word as long as they are on different squares.
Why was my word rejected?
A word can be rejected for several reasons: it isn't in the dictionary, you've already submitted it during this game, the tiles don't form a valid adjacent path, or the word is fewer than three letters. The game displays a brief message explaining the specific reason each time a word is rejected.
What dictionary does Griddle use?
Griddle uses a custom dictionary based on common word-game dictionaries, containing approximately 196,000 words. It supports words of three or more letters rather than the two-letter minimum found in some other word games. Some common slang or informal words may not appear, while some obscure but valid tournament-style words will.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Griddle is a responsive web app that works in any modern mobile browser — Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and others. No app download is required. Simply visit thegriddlegame.com on your phone or tablet.
Scoring
How are points calculated?
Each letter tile has a point value (1 for common letters like E, up to 10 for Q and Z). Your word's base score is the sum of all its tile values. If the word passes through any bonus squares, letter multipliers are applied first, then word multipliers. See the How to Play page for the full letter value table and worked examples.
Do multipliers stack?
Yes. If a word passes through multiple bonus squares, all of their multipliers apply. Letter multipliers are always calculated before word multipliers. For example, a word crossing both a Triple Letter and a Double Word square would first triple the affected letter's value, sum all the tile values, and then double the entire word total.
What's the highest possible score?
There's no fixed maximum — it depends on the day's board layout, which letters land on bonus squares, and how many words you can find in three minutes. Experienced players typically score between 50 and 150 points, but exceptional games with long words through multiplier squares can push well beyond 200.
Do longer words score more?
Generally, yes. Longer words use more tiles, so their base value is higher. However, a short word that hits a Triple Word square can sometimes outscore a longer word on plain tiles. The best strategy is a mix of quick short words and opportunistic long ones through bonus squares.
Daily Puzzle
When does the daily puzzle reset?
A new puzzle is generated every day at midnight based on your local device clock. The board is determined by the calendar date, so all players see the same board on the same day regardless of time zone.
Can I replay today's puzzle?
The daily puzzle can only be played once for stats. After completing it, you can play unlimited bonus rounds with unique boards by tapping "Play New Board." Your daily score, streak, and stats are locked in from your first game.
Do bonus games affect my stats?
No. Only the daily game counts toward your aggregate stats, streaks, and badges. Bonus rounds are "just for fun" — the game displays a message to remind you. This keeps your stats meaningful and the daily challenge fair.
What happens if I miss a day?
Your current streak resets to zero. However, your all-time stats (highest score, total games played, longest streak ever) are preserved. You can start building a new streak the next day you play.
Can I play yesterday's puzzle?
No. Griddle only offers today's board as the daily puzzle. Once the date changes, the previous day's board is gone. This is part of what makes the daily challenge special — it's a shared, one-shot experience.
Technical
Is my data stored anywhere?
All your game data — stats, streaks, badges, and settings — is stored locally in your browser using standard web storage (localStorage). No data is sent to any server, and no account is created. If you clear your browser data or switch devices, your progress will be reset.
Do I need an account?
No. Griddle is designed to be played without any sign-up, login, or account creation. You can start playing immediately by visiting the site.
Does Griddle work offline?
Griddle requires an internet connection for the initial page load and to download the dictionary file. Once loaded, the game runs entirely in your browser — so brief connectivity interruptions during play won't affect your game.
Which browsers are supported?
Griddle works in all modern browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on both desktop and mobile. The game is built with standard web technologies and does not require any plugins or extensions.
General
Is Griddle free?
Yes. Griddle is completely free to play with no in-app purchases, premium tiers, or paywalls. The game is supported by advertising.
Who made Griddle?
Griddle was built by a small indie team passionate about word games. Learn more on the About page, or reach out through the Contact page.
How can I share my results?
After completing the daily game, tap the Share Results button on the end screen. This copies a formatted summary of your score and word count to your clipboard (or opens your device's share menu), so you can paste it into messages, social media, or group chats. Share is available for daily games only, not bonus rounds.
