What Is Griddle? A Quick Introduction to the Daily Word Puzzle

Overview of the Griddle word puzzle game board and interface

If someone just sent you a link to Griddle and you're wondering what it's all about, you're in the right place. This post covers everything you need to know to get started — what the game is, how it works, and why thousands of players come back every day for a fresh puzzle.

The 30-Second Version

Griddle is a free daily word puzzle played in your web browser. You get a 6×6 grid of letter tiles, three minutes on the clock, and one simple objective: find as many words as you can by selecting adjacent tiles. Each letter has a point value, and special bonus squares on the board multiply your score. A new puzzle appears every day, and everyone in the world plays the same board.

How the Game Works

When you visit Griddle, you'll see today's date and a Start Game button. Tapping it launches a quick 3-2-1 countdown, and then the board appears: 36 letter tiles arranged in a 6×6 grid, with a three-minute timer counting down at the top.

Finding Words

To form a word, tap letter tiles one by one. Each tile must be adjacent to the previous one — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Think of it like drawing a connected path through the letters. As you select tiles, the word you're building appears above the board.

Once you've spelled a word you like, hit Submit. If the word is in the dictionary (at least three letters, valid adjacent path, not already submitted), it's accepted and your score increases. The board then shuffles — the same 36 letters rearrange into new positions, revealing fresh word possibilities.

If the word isn't valid, you'll see a brief message explaining why (not in dictionary, too short, already found, or broken path), and you can try again with no penalty.

Scoring

Every letter tile has a point value based on how rare the letter is in English. Common letters like E and T are worth 1 point; rare letters like Q and Z are worth 10. Your word score is the sum of all its tile values.

Four special squares on the board apply multipliers:

Building words through these squares is the key to high scores. A short word through Triple Word often outscores a much longer word on plain tiles. For the complete breakdown, see our scoring guide.

The Daily Puzzle

Griddle's core experience is the daily puzzle. Every day at midnight, a new board is generated from the calendar date. Because the board is determined by the date, every player around the world gets the same puzzle — making scores directly comparable. You get one attempt at the daily game, and your results are saved automatically.

After completing the daily puzzle, you can play unlimited bonus rounds with unique boards. These are great for practice, but they don't count toward your stats or streak. For more on the difference, see Daily vs. Bonus Games.

Stats and Streaks

Griddle tracks your performance across every daily game you play:

All of this is stored locally in your browser — nothing is sent to a server, and no account is required. Your data stays on your device.

Badges

As you play, you'll unlock badges across five categories: Streak (consecutive daily plays), High Score (reaching point thresholds), Long Word (finding words of five to eight letters), Word Count (submitting many words in one game), and Contributor (trying beta features). Badges give you goals beyond the daily score and track your long-term progress.

No Account, No Download, No Catch

Griddle is designed to be as frictionless as possible:

Who Is Griddle For?

Griddle sits at the intersection of casual puzzle games and competitive word games. It's accessible enough for anyone who enjoys words — you don't need tournament-level Scrabble skills to have fun — but deep enough to reward improving players with higher scores, longer words, and harder badges over time.

If you enjoy Wordle, Boggle, Scrabble, or any kind of word puzzle, Griddle will feel familiar but offer its own unique challenges. For a comparison with other popular word games, see Griddle vs. Wordle vs. Boggle.
